Apple stages corporate mobile takeover with iPhone OS 4.0 – InfoWorld

BlackBerry beware: Next-gen iPhone OS targets enterprise users with multitasking, corporate app distribution, and more

At the risk of being branded an Apple fanboy, I have to say Apple's plans for the forthcoming iPhone OS 4.0 will vault the iPhone past all mobile competitors as the best mobile business device -- period. Until now, the iPhone's capabilities for security, app management and distribution, device management, and so forth have been middling at best, creating a real difference versus the BlackBerry for large businesses. In turn, this has let IT dismiss the iPhone as a toy and caused many IT shops to break out in hives when someone wants to use an iPhone on their network, though it's the device that people want.

That's about to change.

[ Stay up on tech news and reviews from your smartphone at infoworldmobile.com. | Get the best iPad and iPhone apps for pros with our business iPhone and iPad apps finder. | See which smartphone is right for you in our mobile "deathmatch" calculator. ]

Apple's new iPhone OS 4.0, currently available in SDK form for iPhone developers and set for general release this summer, takes several major steps to address the needs of corporate mobile usage, as well as amp up the capabilities that will appeal to individuals. As a result, user demand for iPhones will increase significantly, but so will the ability for corporate IT to safely -- even enthusiastically -- embrace the iPhone.

Even better, owners of the iPhone 3G S, the third-generation iPod Touch (the 32GB and 64GB models from fall 2009), and the iPad all will be able to run iPhone OS 4.0, and its capabilities will be available to a large base of existing users. The older iPhone 3G and some second-generation iPod Touch devices will support some -- but not all -- of the new iPhone OS 4.0 capabilities, based on their hardware's capabilities.

Here's why.

Multitasking at long last
A persistent criticism of the iPhone has been its lack of multitasking. Yes, there was basic multitasking at the operating system level for services such as checking email and looking for server-based alerts, including availability of app updates, but nothing for app developers to take advantage of.

Apple iBooks Sets $9.99 Price Point; Adds 30000 Freebies – PC Magazine

In the ongoing war between online bookstores, price is key. And Apple's iBooks electronic bookstore is apparently wading into battle.

According to a "not-so-NDA-complying preview" obtained by AppAdvice, the price for the top five bestsellers on The New York Times' bestsellers list will be $9.99, the same price point that Amazon offers them, and the basis for Amazon's initial disdain for the Apple iPad tablet.

A second post noted that Apple will apparently allow users to quickly and easily download any book from the 30,000 public-domain works offered by the Project Gutenberg digital book repository, which includes The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, among others.

While most of the details surrounding the iPad are known, details surrounding the pricing of popular magazines and other apps are still being finalized in advance of the April 3 ship date. The Wall Street Journal, for example, has already set its WSJ app pricing, and The New York Times and the Conde Nast family of publications are also developing their own apps.

Actually, the ease in which customers will have access to the Project Gutenberg library is probably the news here. It seems unlikely that customers of the iPad or the Amazon Kindle would seek out and download DRM-free versions of popular bestsellers to ensure the best price. Like iTunes, Apple's iBooks store should provide a simple, comprehensive, and easily-organized list of titles for users to download, and the ability to browse an entire library of classic works will almost certainly be a tactic that other e-bookstores will have to emulate to stay in business. Simplicity and ease-of-use has always been the hallmark of the Apple experience, and this is consistent with that.

Possible iPad Users Give Thumbs-Down to Games, Apps – PC Magazine

Users who buy an iPad are unlikely to download applications from the iTunes App Store, especially action or even RPG games, according to a new study by comScore.

A survey of 2,176 Internet users found 15 percent of those surveyed would "seriously consider" buying an Apple iPad in the next three months, compared to 14 percent for the Amazon Kindle and 10 percent for the Barnes & Noble Nook.

While ownership of an iPhone or iPod Touch was a strong predictor of those who have already ordered an iPad, it was not a strong predictor of purchase intent, comScore found. Just 3 percent of so-called "iOwners," or owners of an Iphone or iPod touch, had already purchased the iPad compared to 1 percent of non-iOwners, but 15 percent of each consumer segment indicated an intention to purchase the device in the next three months. Thirty-seven percent said they would use the iPad instead of the iPod touch.

ComScore then asked the question, "If you owned an iPad, how likely would you be to use the following features of activities on the device?" and asked the respondents to rank their results on a seven-point scale.

The most favorable response to this question was "browse the Internet," of which half said they would be likely to do so. A similar 48 percent of those surveyed said they would write and read emails on the tablet. The survey also found that 34 percent would read digital versions of newspapers on the device, while and additional 37 percent would read books: both solid arguments for the success of Apple's iBooks digital book store.

But users also ranked app downloads and consumption, the hallmark of the iPhone, as quite low compared to the other uses. In terms of downloading apps, more (36 percent) said they would be unlikely to download apps than those who said they would (26 percent). And while respondents were about equally split on whether they would download word-based apps onto the iPad (30 percent for, 32 percent against), a solid 44 percent said they would refuse to download first-person-shooter, action, or RPG apps to the iPad, versus 22 percent who said they would.

About a third of those surveyed said they wanted the iPad to include a camera. About 43 percent asked Apple to include the ability to run multiple apps at once.

Personally, I tend to doubt the accuracy of the statements on the apps, only because consumers haven't yet had a chance to evaluate the quality of any iPad-specific apps. Although I can't see how anyone would play an action-oriented game on an iPad, as well as on a PC or a game console, all the platform needs are a few quality apps to turn that assumption on its head.

Opera Reports Upswing from Windows Browser Ballot – PC World

Opera Software claims UK downloads of its Opera 10.50 web browser have increased by 85 percent since Microsoft made its 'browser choice screen' available.

The "web browser choice screen" was made available at the start of March, and is part of a proposal by the software developer to help settle the EU's antitrust investigation, which was sparked by a complaint filed by the Norwegian browser developer in December 2007.

The screen offers 12 different browsers -- a mix of popular programs such as Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera, along with lesser-known browsers such as Sleipnir, Green Browser, Maxthon, Avant and Flock.

It is available to Windows PCs that use Internet Explorer as the default browser via the Windows Update system, which is used to distribute security patches.

"This confirms that when users are given a real choice on how they choose the most important piece of software on their computer, the browser, they will try out alternatives," said Hkon Wium Lie, CTO at Opera. "A multitude of browsers will make the web more standardised and easier to browse."

Opera also said 46 percent of all UK downloads of the web browser had come directly from the browser choice screen.Web users will continue to be offered the choice screen well into May for existing Windows computers and for five years on new installations.

National Broadband Plan Gets Down to Business – PC World

We've heard a lot about how the Federal Communications Commission's national broadband plan aims to provide 100 million U.S. households with 100Mbps
broadband connections so far, but precious little on how it could affect corporate users.

    Who else wants national broadband?

There is a good reason for this since the newly-unveiled plan is primarily focusing on boosting broadband adoption and quality in the consumer market. But while there isn't any direct plan to boost enterprise IT networks, businesses may find themselves benefitting indirectly from a lot of the proposed policies in the plan.

The most obvious example of this comes from the fact that increased broadband speeds and deployment will increase workers' ability to effectively telecommute. In addition to proposing spending $15.5 billion for new broadband deployment, the FCC has also vowed to free up 500MHz of spectrum to use for wireless broadband networks. Taken together, these two proposals could make faster broadband available in virtually every area of the United States.

"In a recent survey we did, 84% of enterprises said they were increasing telecommuting," says Nemertes Research President Johna Till Johnson. "If that happens then one of benefits to enterprises is that they can count on having a much broader pipe available to their employees."

Gartner analyst Alex Winogradoff also sees increased capacity and access for telecommuters as one of the primary enterprise benefits of the broadband plan. In particular, he says that workers living in rural areas would no longer have to commute long distances for meetings if they can attend them more easily through high-quality video conferencing.

"The ancillary benefits of this plan will let more people work at home," he says. "The ability for you to have access to more locations in rural areas rather than just cities will help from an enterprise standpoint."

Dan Hays, the director and head of the telecom practice at global management consulting firm PRTM, says that enterprises will also benefit from tangentially from FCC initiatives to implement broadband more aggressively in healthcare and in energy grids, since increased technological efficiency in those industries should help hold down health and energy costs for businesses. Additionally, he says that the increased broadband speeds the plan envisions will give businesses more bang for their bucks on broadband connectivity.

"If you look at the plan released this week, it doesn't really focus on the needs of enterprises," he says. "But there are a large number of ancillary benefits that enterprises will see if the aspirations of the plan are achieved."

The rise of the app entrepreneur – BBC News

The soaring popularity of smart phones has created a new type of entrepreneur - the "app developer".

Whether it is finding ladies' toilets on the London underground, identifying bird songs, forecasting snow conditions at ski resorts or just buying stuff online, somebody, somewhere has come up with a clever little computer program that lets you do the task from your handset.

The industry has grown up around the iPhone. More than 140,000 different iPhone applications have appeared since Apple opened its Apps Store on iTunes to outside developers in July 2008.

Although it is the dominant player, there are many more to choose from including those from BlackBerry, Microsoft, Google, Nokia, and Samsung.

Applications rarely cost more than a few dollars or the equivalent in other currencies to download. Many are free.

But already the app market is worth nearly two and a half billion dollars a year, according to data from AdMob, an advertising company.

Other smart phone brands are striving to erode Apple's early lead by developing their own platforms for apps.

    'Pocket gods'

The popularity of apps has created a gold rush mentality among a new breed of independent software developers. Some have even become millionaires.

However, it is hard to find an app developer who admits to being rich. Dave Castelnuovo is a possible candidate.

Based in San Francisco, he is the co-creator of Pocket God, a popular game for the iPhone that costs 99 cents and has been downloaded by more than two million people.

A season of reports exploring the extraordinary power of the internet, including:

"We are currently the best-selling app of all time," he says, sounding slightly bemused.

The runaway success of his product has clearly taken him by surprise.

"When we started out we only budgeted a week's worth of time to Pocket God, hoping we'd make a little bit of money and have a framework for doing a real game," he says.

The setting for the game is a tropical island peopled by characters called the pygmies. The iPhone user controls their lives.

"You can do good things like watching them fish or feeding them," explains Mr Castelnuovo.

"But most of the fun lies in the sadistic things you can do, like sacrificing them or flicking them into a volcano."

He describes the game as "a safe sandbox that allows people to get that mean itch out".

It is an interesting insight into what tickles the fancy of smart phone users around the world

But Mr Castelnuovo denies that he is a millionaire. "Uncle Sam has kind of taken care of that," he says referring to the taxes he must pay the US government.

    'Powerful idea'

The success of Pocket God and other pioneering novelty apps has inspired large numbers of small scale entrepreneurs to have a go at developing software for smart phones.

Nobody knows how many app developers there are, but the figure could run into thousands.

However, with so much competition around it has got a lot harder to create a top seller.

"You definitely have to do a lot more work today - doing PR and talking to people," explains Mr Castelnuovo.

The essential point about current apps is that they are mostly intended to entertain and they have not involved a lot of work to develop.

The typical app development company consists of "two kids in a garage", explains David Yoffie, a technology expert at Harvard Business school.

But he believes that ultimately the app could change the face of computing.

"There's enormous innovation and a constant stream of new creative applications are coming online", he says.

"So forget about current applications, what matters are the creative things we may see in future."

Mr Yoffie draws a parallel with the early days of personal computers.

"If you think about the old spread sheets before Lotus 123 and Excel, they weren't terribly functional," he says, referring to two landmark programs in desktop computing.

"But ultimately we figured out how to take the basic ideas that were developed in the very early days and make them better, more effective and very powerful," he adds.

    'Crazy ideas'

Mr Yoffie believes apps for smart phones will go through a similar process of evolution.

In the longer term, he thinks smart phones will have the capability to act like portable subtitling machines, translating foreign languages for those visiting foreign countries.

But not everyone believes the centre of gravity in computing will shift to smart phones.

Among the doubters is Mr Castelnuovo.

"When something generates a ton of excitement at a certain point people are entering it because of the excitement not because there's anything solid there," he says

"It's a lot like the internet bust," he says, referring to the share price collapse of internet companies a decade ago.

"A lot of people are doing a lot of crazy ideas... it could end up being a bubble," he says. But he also believes the app economy "could take off".

So the two-year-old market for smart phone apps seems to be at a crossroads.

On the one hand it is growing fast and there is the potential for really powerful apps that could change of the nature of computing.

On the other hand, it is also possible that the app phenomenon has been overblown.

Commentators say a lot depends on the success or failure of Apple's much-hyped tablet computer, the iPad, which is due to go on sale soon.

Many see the iPad, with its iPhone-like appearance but much larger screen, as the ultimate vehicle for running apps.
